Skatepark is an expansive, large-scale ensemble performance created by Mette Ingvartsen that explores the velocity, energy, and physical memory of movement on wheels. Bringing together an intergenerational group of professional dancers, local skaters, and youth, the work treats the theater stage as a fluid, communal concrete park. It frames skateboarding not merely as a subcultural pastime or a spectacle of virtuoso feats, but as a visceral choreographic language that actively reclaims, maps, and subverts urban geography.
The choreography honors the rigorous, gritty reality of the practice; a continuous cycle of trying, falling, and collectively pushing the boundaries of physical possibility. By orchestrating the boisterous interactions, speed trajectories, and inevitable physical collisions of bodies on wheels, Skatepark constructs a temporary, self-organizing microcosm on stage. Oscillating between individual persistence and collective reliance, the performance emerges as a blueprint for an alternative, highly adaptive society we can learn from.
